River Surfing on the Eisbach

In order to surf you have to go to the sea, don´t you? Nope, when you live in Munich you can surf on the Eisbach at the south end of the English Garden – this is an anabranch of the river Isar.It is not really officially permitted, however it is tolerated. Since the 70^th
there were Eisbach –Surfer. Some dudes even came to live in Munich in order to surf on the Eisbach. So there is by now a real subculture which has generated real professionals.

There is even a documentary about the surfer girls and beach boys `Keep Surfing` by Björn Richie who is part of this subculture. It was published last year after 10 years of making this documentary.

Thus the Eisbach Surfer is a tourist attraction in Munich. So the surfer is happy – he/ she have audience and the tourist! So if you stop by in Munich make sure you go to see them!
